How Often Should You Back Up Your Data?
June 8, 2026
Ask yourself one question: if your computer died right now, how much work would you lose? Your answer is the real guide to how often you should back up.
The 3-2-1 rule
A time-tested approach for both homes and businesses:
- Keep 3 copies of important data
- On 2 different types of storage
- With 1 copy kept offsite (or in the cloud)
A practical schedule
- Critical business data: daily, automatically.
- Personal photos and documents: weekly is usually plenty.
- A full system image: before any major change, like an upgrade or repair.
Don't forget to test it
A backup you've never restored from is a backup you can't fully trust. Test a restore occasionally so you know it works before you need it.
We can help you design and set up a backup strategy — including offsite and full-disk imaging — so you never lose what matters. Get in touch to talk through what's right for you.
